Washington International Airport (3 Separate Contracts)

On-going improvements, renovations, repairs and relocation of facilities, task orders include from minor repairs to major renovations throughout the Airport and surrounding facilities. Some of the task orders are as follows:

  • Renovations of main terminal, concourse C. D. and DX, upper and lower levels including replacement of glazing system: curtain walls, storefront windows, ziplock windows, pressure plate windows and steel windows.

  • Relocation of Baggage Service Offices for United, Delta, Southwest, Northwest, and Continental Airlines.

  • Baggage Service area Modifications including replacement of high-speed O.H. doors.

  • Modifications for replacement of exit signs throughout the airport.

  • Addition and renovation of chemical storage building for handling of Sodium Acetate.

  • Replacement of Roof for 20,000 SF air side of main terminal.

  • Renovations to MAC Building, and roof replacement 95,000 SF.

  • Tenant Improvements MAC Building.

CONSTRUCTION COST:

Total construction cost $175 million
MIMARCH part $45 million


The design posed several challenges, some of which were as follows:

  1. Working with structural constraints of the existing structure.

  2. Providing specialized details for curtain walls to meet elevator code requirements.

  3. Providing slab openings to accommodate pits for moving walkways at the top level.

  4. Designing around existing conduits at the lower level.

  5. Providing unique features for metal panel roofs.

  6. Detailing connections to skywalk bridges, designed by URS Corporation.

  7. Providing penthouses to hide mechanical and electrical equipment.

 

COMPLETION:

2002

MIMARCH was hired as sub-consultant for the design and development of major portion of project the Terminal Curbside Expansion and Skywalks at BWI Airport. MIMARCH was challenged to produce final construction documents in a very short span of time of 11 weeks, and very limited budget of hours. MIMARCH produced the project in time, within the project budget and produced 60 architectural drawings of outstanding quality.

The project, consisting of a 40,000 sq. ft addition and renovation of existing parking garage, included the following:

  1. Addition of an Orientation Lobby at the sixth floor overlooking the main terminal.

  2. Addition of nine glass elevators and three moving walkways.

  3. Enclosures for moving walkways and 25 new enclosed lobbies for existing stairs and elevators.

  4. Extending four existing staircases.

  5. Handicap ramps.
